William Tilghman


William Tilghman was Chief Legal Officer of Avendra, LLC and its immediate predecessor, Marketplace By Marriott, LLC, from the time of its inception in 1998 to 2009. In this role, Bill participated directly in the creation of Avendra and its roll-out as a newly formed procurement services entity. Bill reported to the CEO and was a member of the management executive committee. He has direct, first-hand knowledge of all phases of the hospitality procurement services model from its design down to its day-to-day operations. His relevant legal duties, in addition to conventional corporate legal tasks, included the supervision and negotiation of all Avendra supplier contracts and all Avendra customer contracts.

Prior to joining Marriott/Avendra, Bill was a principal in an Atlanta, GA, USA based investment partnership which made several acquisitions of mid-market companies located in the American south. Following this experience, Bill then became majority owner and president of Sunstates Refrigerated Services, Inc., a 1.2 M square foot temperature controlled food warehousing and blast freezing company. Sunstates had 125 employees in 7 locations and annual turn-over of $12 M.

Prior to this, Bill worked for Schlumberger Limited, a global oil field services company. His principal positions with Schlumberger, both based in Paris France, were as International Legal Counsel and International Tax Director, in both cases with responsibility for Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia and South America. In this role, he traveled extensively to the Middle East often to very remote areas, often under very challenging circumstances. Prior to joining Schlumberger, Bill was an associate with Emmet Marvin and Martin, a Wall Street (New York) law firm specializing in banking matters

  • Bill is bi-lingual in English and French and maintains a primary residence in the US and in France.
